Seth Meyers has tested positive for the virus and has canceled his NBC Late Night show for the rest of the week. “After negative tests Monday and Tuesday I tested positive for COVID this morning,” he tweeted. “Canceling shows the rest of this week. Apologies to our scheduled guests and loyal viewers.”
Last week was the week the latenight hosts contracted Covid with Late Night’s Seth Meyers and The Late Late Show’s James Corden both being hit by the virus. Meyers returned to host his NBC show Monday evening, although the former SNL star recorded it remotely after receiving his positive test last week.
Greta Thunberg, Dr. Jane Goodall and Bill Gates appeared as guests across late night on Wednesday to discuss the issues of climate change. As Gates shared, “We have a lot to do here on Earth.”
The comedian has agreed a deal to host Late Night with Seth Meyers through 2025, which should take him to around 1,800 episodes of the show. Crowd energy propels the immediacy of a daily talk show, and with most of those shows and their late-night counterparts stripped of a live audience in the wake of the coronavirus, it has had an unsettling effect. James Poniewozik writes the experience has been “a brief reminder of the function that audiences serve and of the kinds of virtual connection we’re going to crave through our uncertain hunkerings-down.”
Late-night comedians will be out in full force during this year’s Republican and Democratic presidential conventions. While the comics and their shows are scrutinizing speeches, delegates and party officials, looking to deliver laughs as rapidly as possible, they also have the opportunity to establish their hosts as the comedic conscience for this political era — to own that role as Jon Stewart did over 16 years as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.

Comedian and TV host Kathy Griffin decries the lack of female late-night talk show hosts, noting that Joan Rivers’ short-lived Fox show nearly 30 years ago is the only example of a female hosted show. Given the usually long runs of late-night hosts, “we could be looking at 40 or 50 years until a woman is hosting a network late-night talker,” Griffin says.

NBC said Sunday that 12-year Saturday Night Live cast member Seth Meyers will replace Jimmy Fallon at the 12:35 a.m. Late Night show next year. Fallon is moving up an hour as Jay Leno’s replacement on the Tonight show.
Jimmy Fallon’s march to inherit The Tonight Show is nearly complete. The Late Night host has closed a new deal with NBC that will pave the way for him to replace Jay Leno in the 11:35 p.m. slot, a well-placed source says. The timing and nature of the Fallon announcement is said to be in flux, with some at NBC said to believe that the network should wait to confirm the Tonight transition until it can close a deal with Fallon’s replacement. The strong frontrunner for that 12:35 a.m. job is said to be Saturday Night Live stalwart Seth Meyers.
