This spring, three Denver TV stations installed news directors from out of state, all of them women. All have proven ratings success elsewhere. Two face the task of restoring morale at beaten, battered newsrooms. None believes that gender plays a role in journalistic decision making.
The news director of the Hubbard-owned Minneapolis ABC affiliate is going back to Colorado, where her parents and two of her three brothers live, to be news director at Scripps-owned ABC affil KMGH.
The former Minneapolis news director will lead news operations at the Scripps Denver ABC affiliate beginning April 30.
At the broadcaster’s KSTP and KSTC in Minneapolis, News Director Lindsay Radford is looking for reporters with ability, not just affordability. “We still value paying talented reporters,” she says, and she’s willing to wait for individuals who not only bring news know-how, but also the perspective that comes with time.
