Kelly Ripa would like Anderson Cooper to replace Michael Strahan, but her bosses at ABC aren’t ready to go there yet. The two sides are jockeying for control over the successor to Strahan, the former NFL who is leaving Friday for a new role at Good Morning America.

News that Strahan would leave on May 13 came from a Live with Kelly & Michael spokesperson on Tuesday just hours after Ripa returned to the syndicated talk show after taking time off to “gather (her) thoughts” in response to learning last week that Strahan would be leaving for full-time duties on Good Morning America.

Kelly Ripa, star of ABC’s syndicated morning chat show Live with Kelly and Michael, is due to return to the program Tuesday after sitting out most of last week. She was said to be upset that she was kept out of the loop for the network’s plan to switch co-host Michael Strahan to Good Morning America later this year. On Friday, staffers received an email from Ripa saying that she would come back to work on Tuesday. In the meantime, she got apologies from Strahan and ABC boss Ben Sherwood, among others, for how the GMA affair was handled and for not telling her sooner.

Kelly Ripa’s unexplained absence came amid published reports that she felt blindsided and angered by co-host Michael Strahan’s departure to join Good Morning America fulltime. The syndicated Live With Kelly And Michael is losing Michael Strahan to a fulltime slot on ABC’s Good Morning America starting in September. Strahan has worked a couple of days a week at GMA for the past two years, but he always has to leave midway through to head to the Live studio on Manhattan’s upper West Side. He’s joining the show’s regular cast of Robin Roberts, George Stephanopoulos, Lara Logan, Amy Robach and Ginger Zee.

Live is good through 2019-20 on the ABC Owned Television Stations Group, while Who Wants To Be A Millionaire is extended through 2016-17 on the majority of ABC Owned Stations.

New talk show The Real is doing well with younger women but Meredith Vieira is struggling, as did prior shows starring former Today co-hosts.

Judge Judy experiences 13% increase over last year’s debut, and was the week’s highest rated syndicated show in the week ending Sept. 15. Talk shows also continued to post strong ratings. Dr. Phil was No. 1 in households with a 12% bump over last year. Live with Kelly & Michael was up 13%.

Chicago’s top-rated television station is dropping its 11 a.m. Monday-through-Friday newscast after more than 20 years this fall and replacing it with the locally produced Windy City, which has been airing at 9 a.m. Windy City is being dislodged from the 9 a.m. slot by Live with Kelly and Michael, which has been airing on Tribune’s WGN. Like WLS, Live is owned by Disney/ABC.
