Tegna-owned NBC affiliate WLBZ Bangor, Maine, will no longer produce a 6 p.m. weekday news show beginning Oct. 8. The 6 p.m. newscast will instead originate in Portland, Maine, on co-owned NBC affil WCSH, as do WLBZ’s weekday morning, noon, 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. broadcasts.

KDFW Gets Early Start In Dallas’ Social Lead
Fox Television Stations-owned KDFW holds a clear lead in Dallas-Fort Worth’s social media scene based on data from Shareablee. The station has had nearly 9.2 million social actions in the last six months and is closing in on a million fans/followers. Its newsroom says the foundations for such a strong social platform go back nearly two decades before there was a “social” media.
Cox-owned ABC affiliate WFTV became the first Orlando, Fla., station to use drones in news coverage last Friday. The Federal Aviation Administration last week approved a petition by WFTV and other stations in the Cox Media Group to fly the drones.

The pope is about to make a historic visit to the U.S., with a stop off in Philadelphia. But, the TV coverage might be a bit lacking. The union representing the roughly 75 photographers and technicians at KYW overwhelmingly voted Tuesday to strike over stalled contract negotiations. The news comes a day after roughly 65 photographers and technicians at WCAU notified station management that they are exercising their right to terminate a collective bargaining agreement in 10 days and set a Sept. 21 strike date.
As it opens a new $3 million, 15,000-square-foot building, Nexstar will add 30 employees to support an expansion of its local news programming under the WFXR news brand that launches Oct. 1.
WDBJ Chief Pleased With Media Coverage
Jeffrey Marks, president-GM of WDBJ Roanoke, Va., says that while representing the station to the world after two of his journalists were gunned down was tough, “I think 99% of reporters on stories like these do show compassion.” But, he added, holding up a mike to one side of the story and then the other side of the story doesn’t suffice. “We have to work diligently to provide history and perspective.”

The Milwaukee NBC affiliate is replacing its 3 p.m. weekday newscast with a new syndicated lifestyle/talk show hosted by Tyra Banks. FABLife premieres Monday at 3 p.m. GM Joe Poss said Thursday that the decision to drop the 3 p.m. newscast and add a syndicated show had been in the works since last year, before the station was acquired by E.W.
