FCC Grants WRNN’s Market Mod Petition

The FCC has granted the market modification petition of WRNN New Rochelle, N.Y. The FCC’s Media Bureau said Monday that WRNN’s market now includes all of the New York DMA, which means the Altice cable system serving Suffolk (N.Y.), Essex (N.J.), Hudson (N.J.), Monmouth (N.J.), Ocean (N.J.), and Union (N.J.) counties must carry the station.

This week, the FCC reiterated a policy of being very tough on petitions to add communities to television markets to change the stations that are considered to be part of the market for cable and satellite carriage purposes.

Congress Tells FCC To Review Market Modifications

The recently passed 2019 Appropriations bill — the one that avoided a second government shutdown — was a massive tome that included directing the FCC to provide a “full analysis” of its treatment of market modification petitions. Those are petitions by broadcasters or satellite operators or county officials to modify a market so that satellite viewers in a Nielsen market that crosses state lines can get local news and sports from TV stations from another Nielsen market in their own state instead.
