In the 25-year history of The View, Meghan McCain is one of the only co-hosts to leave on her own — without being fired. In her new memoir, Bad Republican, she decided that she had to leave The View on Jan. 5, her second day back from maternity leave. McCain had given birth to her daughter, Liberty, in September 2020, and she was suffering from severe postpartum anxiety. She experienced irrational fears that someone would kidnap or hurt her daughter, and she was terrified about being on TV again.
Meghan McCain is leaving The View, after nearly four years on the ABC daytime show, Variety has confirmed. As the panel’s resident conservative talking head, McCain regularly sparred with her co-hosts, resulting in many viral — and highly-rated — on-air moments. Her last day will be at the end of the show’s season later this summer.
The View came to a grinding halt Monday when Whoopi Goldberg and Meghan McCain clashed over the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
Addressing reports that Meghan McCain wants to leave The View, a spokesperson for ABC said: “The co-hosts and The View have had an incredible season and we expect them all back for an epic year ahead.”
Sources close to McCain tell The Daily Beast she feels like “a caged animal, exhausted, defeated” on the ABC talk show. “It’s getting to the point where it’s not worth the emotional toll every week.”
