Republicans’ pathway to the Senate majority narrowed in the early hours of Wednesday morning, as Lt. Gov. John Fetterman defeated Republican Mehmet Oz in Pennsylvania. It marked the first Senate-seat flip of the election, with Democrat Fetterman slated to fill the position currently held by retiring Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.).
Until now, Winfrey had said she would leave the election to Pennsylvanians, but she changed that position in an online discussion on voting in next Tuesday’s election. “I said it was up to the citizens of Pennsylvania and of course, but I will tell you all this, if I lived in Pennsylvania, I would have already cast my vote for John Fetterman for many reasons,” Winfrey said, before going on to urge listeners to vote for Democrats running for governor and Senate in various states.

When America fell asleep watching the election returns Tuessday night, Dave McCormick led Dr. Mehmet Oz 31.2% to 31.1% in the race to become the Republican nominee in the election for the Pennsylvania U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Pat Toomey. What a difference a day makes. Late Wednesday, those results had flipped, with Oz registering 31.2% and McCormick 31.1%.

A representative for Fox Television Stations said Tuesday that Dr. Oz has been pulled from its stations in the New York and Philadelphia markets now that the celebrity surgeon has made his candidacy official. Other stations that reach Pennsylvania TV households are likely to at least temporarily drop the program as well. The decision to pull the program is necessitated by the FCC’s equal time provision for TV stations. If a declared candidate for political office is given free airtime on a station, the same opportunity has to be given to other contenders.

Dr. Mehmet Oz will air an episode of his syndicated talk show today that specifically takes on the group of 10 doctors from around the country who wrote to a Columbia dean about him. The group suggested last week that Oz promotes “quack treatments” of weight loss supplements with no scientific proof that they work.
In response to a group of 10 doctors who sent a letter to Columbia University this week urging the university to remove Oz from its faculty for what they called an “egregious lack of integrit,” the talk show host said his show provides “multiple points of view” including his own and that his own views are offered “without conflict of interest.”
“Dr. Oz has repeatedly shown disdain for science and for evidence-based medicine,” said a letter 10 physicians sent to a Columbia University dean earlier this week. Led by Dr. Henry Miller of California’s Stanford University, the doctors wrote that Oz “has manifested an egregious lack of integrity by promoting quack treatments and cures in the interest of personal financial gain.”
While his day-time health show reaches millions, Dr. Oz has come under fire for endorsing nutrition supplements with dubious efficacy. Today, Oz was on Capitol Hill to testify on a Senate hearing about such weight loss scams, and to address his role in providing fodder for false advertisements.

Dr. Mehmet Oz led almost 100 racers in a 5K run down the Las Vegas Strip at 6:30 a.m. this morning as part of the ongoing PromaxBDA Station Summit. Oz, host of Sony Pictures Television’s recently renewed Dr. Oz, led racers from Planet Hollywood down the Strip and back. Oz, a cardiovascular surgeon at New York’s Presbyterian Hospital, is at the annual gathering meeting with stations that carry his show. Sony and Oz stations are reviewing marketing plans for the talk show’s fifth season premiering this fall. In addition to the 5K run, Oz appeared on a morning news show and an afternoon talk show on Meredith’s Las Vegas Fox affiliate KVVU.
