New remote production techniques, distributed workflows and onsite safety protocols have dramatically reshaped sports production. As COVID-19 continues to be a threat, sports producers can expect less travel, trucks staying in place and a slowdown of UHD production until the crisis abates.
Costs are inhibiting a flood of 4K sports production, but 1080p HDR offers numerous practical advantages, among them that the improvement in picture quality is more readily apparent to consumers than the gain from 4K resolution. The NBA in 4K has finally arrived in the U.S. NBA TV and DirecTV delivered UHD coverage of two games, one on Nov. 22 and the other on Dec. 3, with Altitude Sports and Mobile TV Group producing both the HD and 4K feeds out of one truck.
