When KXLY Spokane got its drone, the staff was expecting to be able to use it to cover all kinds of news stories. What the newsroom didn’t anticipate was how limited the area to fly in was going to be: there are pretty tight FAA regulations around Spokane because of two airports and a military base in the area. Like any good innovator, station executives didn’t let this setback stop them though. They used it as an opportunity to create a new franchise for the station. They weren’t really able to fly in the city, but the area all around — the beautiful scenery of the Inland Northwest — was fair game.

With much of Washington state in the midst of a fire emergency, two Morgan Murphy Media-owned stations in parts of the state in the center of the fires approached Dish Network yesterday morning to ask if Dish would put the stations in those two markets back up temporarily while the companies continue their ongoing retransmission consent negotiations. Dish agreed and KXLY Spokane and KVEW Yakima are now back on the Dish system for the time being.

CEO Jack Perry says in addition to developing the platform that stations will be able to use to deliver their programming via broadband to interconnected TV sets, tablets and smart phones in their markets, his company is also lining up national programming to supplement whatever programming the participating stations choose to put on the platform. Preliminary testing on stations is slotted for next month, with the goal of a commercial rollout by January’s CES.
