As dramatically demonstrated on the show floor, virtual production enables visual effects work to be done in advance, and it’s taking off across cinematic, commercial and live production. Above, the author takes some new virtual production technology for a test drive.

Attendance may have been almost halved by the pandemic, but tech vendors felt the more intimate environment allowed them to conduct business on a more productive level. On the show floor, the continued shift of broadcast workflows to the public cloud dominated many discussions, while others focused on NextGen TV’s pressing need to monetize.
Cloud And IP Tech Dominate NAB Show Floor

With less hardware to demonstrate and a much-reduced exhibition floor footprint, the first post-pandemic NAB Show pointed the way to a future where software demos of cloud, IP and hybrid environments have become the new norm.

Holt was at the annual NAB Show in Las Vegas over the weekend to accept the honor, telling event attendees, “I have so much respect for this medium [broadcast television] and so much belief in its future,” adding, “And yes, the media landscape is rapidly evolving but broadcast programs remain important touchstones in our culture, our society, holding true to a legacy of excellence and integrity while always peeking around the corner of technology to deliver to our audiences where they are and how they consume our work and product.”

Curtis LeGeyt, NAB president and CEO, offered his State of the Industry presentation at the NAB Show in Las Vegas on Monday. He broke down his four priorities as he works with policymakers. Among them, he said Congress must take action to rein in “the gatekeeping ability of the Big Tech giants,” mentioning how local broadcasters lose some $2 billion annually when their content is accessed through Google and Facebook.

Streaming is important but complicated for PBS, according to Ira Rubenstein, chief digital and marketing officer for the public broadcasting network. “For the last eight years I’ve been at PBS, I’ve been very focused on broadening the distribution of our local stations to digital, and you have to do that at scale,” said Rubinstein, speaking at a session at NAB Show’s Capitalize Experimental Zone theater on Sunday.
