NBC Boston Gets Soft Launch Over The Air

Over-the-air viewers in Boston can get a glimpse of NBC’s future with the Countdown to NBC Boston channel that launched today. It’s the NBC-owned station’s push to get viewers to rescan their TV sets or set top boxes to WBTS on ch. 8 and ch. 60.2 in Northern Massachusetts and New Hampshire before the station launches for real on Jan. 1, 2017.

NBC’s New Boston O&O, WBTS, Sets Lineup

To be known as NBC Boston, the O&O will air on low-power WBTS on virtual chs. 8 and 8.2 and rely heavily on cable and satellite distribution. The O&O will replace long-time affiliate WHDH, owned by Ed Ansin, starting Jan. 1. NBC also announced programming for the new O&O along with the teams for each of its newscasts. The news operation is being built atop NECN, NBC’s regional cable news service.

NBC Owned Television Stations unveiled its upgraded iPhone apps today with features like interactive radar, quick access to breaking news and the capability to send video from a mobile device to a television. The upgrades are the result of a rapid increase in digital mobile traffic that NBC owned-and-operated stations were seeing and comes just over a year after the company, a division of NBCUniversal, announced it was bringing its Web and app development in-house.

WNBC GM Michael Jack Sets Retirement Date

After 40 years in television, the head of NBC’s New York flagship O&O will step down next June. Prior to taking over at WNBC in 2010, Jack ran two other NBC stations, WRC Washington and WCHM Columbus, Ohio.

The NBC O&Os and Telemundo stations cooperate in covering stories, with reporters, anchors and weathercasters evolving into “a culture of one,” especially in markets with heavy Hispanic population. And in markets without an NBC O&O, the cooperation extends to the NBC affiliate. “We have so much competition in Spanish and we have so much competition in English, that it makes no sense for us to compete with each other,” says Ozzie Martinez, the Telemundo group’s VP of news.

About 75 local broadcasters representing mostly NBC affiliates around the country are geared up to go to the Winter Olympics in Russia. The NBC Owned Television Stations are sending 25 anchors, reporters and producers. Gannett Broadcasting will have 20 in Sochi, including several from newly acquired Belo stations. And Hearst is sending nine. In each case, the contingents are larger than ever before.
