The Kentucky Derby will be postponed until Sept.5, organizer Churchill Downs said Tuesday morning. It was slated to run May 2 and be telecast on NBC Sports Network. It would be the 146th Derby and is the first time it won’t be help on the first Saturday in May since 1945. At the time the government issued a ban on horse racing due to World War II.

The companies hinted in December, when they announced a sports content alliance, that we’d see collaborative programming arrangements like the two announced today. This week they’ll introduce Fantasy Football Live — Thursday Night, a weekly show that helps NFL fantasy players build their teams. A version for TV will run each week at 6:30 p.m. ET on NBC Sports Network. At 7 p.m. a digital-only version will appear on Yahoo Sports and NBCSports.com.
NBC Sports Network draws its best cable regular-season viewership in 19 years, 392,000 total viewers per game, up 18%, after losing a third of the season to a labor dispute.
The deal, which begins next season, will provide more than 100 hours of programming across NBC and cable channel NBC Sports Network.
Under a partnership established earlier this week, Red Bull’s media-production arm will provide 35 hours of action-sports programming— the “Red Bull Signature Series” — to begin airing on both NBC and the NBC Sports Network in January. As part of the deal, Red Bull is likely to be featured prominently, not just in the commercials and on-air graphics that surround them.
NBCUniversal is expected to announce today that it is renaming Versus, Comcast’s ratings-challenged 24-hour sports channel, as the NBC Sports Network in January 2012.
