Oregon Governor Signs Opt-Out Privacy Law

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek on Tuesday signed a privacy bill that gives state residents the right to opt out of ad targeting based on their online activity. The Oregon Consumer Privacy Act (SB 619) also provides that people have the right to learn what personal data about them has been collected, and which third parties received that information. The measure’s definition of personal data is broad enough to cover pseudonymous identifiers — such as cookies — that can be linked to consumers.

Oregon’s attorney general announced that she is investigating Fox Corp.’s board of directors for “breach of fiduciary duty” after Fox News repeatedly broadcast election lies in the wake of the 2020 election. That resulted in a historic $787 million defamation settlement with Dominion Voting Systems. “Treasurer Read and I believe that Fox’s board of directors breached its fiduciary duties by allowing Fox News to broadcast false claims that Dominion and Smartmatic rigged the 2020 presidential election,” said Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum in a statement. “We hope to hold the board accountable and protect the long-term value of Oregon’s investment in Fox Corp.

Armed Protesters Break Into Oregon Capitol

According to the Oregon State Police and multiple media reports, a group of armed protesters broke windows and stormed the capitol while the state legislature was in session on Monday. Those assembled also attacked a photographer for the Salem Statesman General. One is heard on video telling the photographer, “I’m gonna f*ck you up,” as the journalist leaves.

Oregon Establishes Broadband Office

Gov. Kate Brown issued an executive order establishing the Oregon Broadband Office within the Oregon Business Development Department. The governor’s recommended budget includes funding to fully staff the new broadband office.  “This is an economic and equity issue, ” said Brown. “Broadband is essential for businesses to grow, and for schools, health care providers and first responders to deliver the highest quality of service.”

In Portland, Ore., a healthy media economy has led to TV spending increases of 3% to 5% over a year ago, with unit pricing up as much as 10% in high-demand dayparts. Demand is coming from a variety of categories, including automotive, telecom and financial, while the retail and fast food categories have decreased spending versus a year ago.
