The National Press Photographers Association, the Poynter Institute, Google News Lab, Drone Journalism Lab,and DJI have unveiled an innovative program to train journalists in using drones, or unmanned aerial systems, for their news coverage. The program, which features hands-on workshops and online teaching, is powered by the Google News Lab.
Despite the economic imperatives facing the media industry, professional journalists lag behind educators and others in rating the importance of multimedia and other digital storytelling skills, the Poynter Institute’s Core Skills for the Future of Journalism has found. The new research findings will be discussed in a free webinar at 2 p.m. today.
Timothy Franklin, managing editor of Bloomberg News in Washington, will become Poynter’s fifth president since the institute was founded in 1975. He succeeds Karen Dunlap, who is retiring after a decade as president.
