The history of the American presidency is one of an office accommodating to the needs of its occupants while also responding to an environment in flux — and few White House rituals illustrate the continuity and change of the institution more than the presidential press conference. One hundred years ago this month, President Woodrow Wilson established the press conference as a forum in which the chief executive answers questions from reporters on his policies and leadership.
