The likely contenders for Thursday’s Emmy nominations include hit series Empire and Black-ish and their wealth of critically acclaimed black actors, and Jane the Virgin and its standout Latina star, Gina Rodriguez. Nominees in top categories are to be announced Thursday morning by Uzo Aduba, an Emmy winner last year for her Orange is the New Black role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren, and So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley.

Whoever said the seasons don’t change in L.A. couldn’t be more wrong. There are in fact two: Oscar season and Emmy season. The Emmys show may still be more than four months away, but with nominations in July (online voting starts June 15), campaigning is already at a fever pitch, with screeners flooding the mail and “For Your Consideration” panels assembling nightly. This year is shaping up to be one of the most intense, kicked off by the TV Academy’s expansive rule changes, announced in February.

Next year’s Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast not in September, as in most years, but rather in late August 2014 to avoid a conflict with NBC’s Sunday Night Football. One source says the TV Academy has decided on an Aug. 24 date but a rep for the Academy declined to comment.
The TV Academy has inked a one-year deal to make Yahoo its official digital partner for red carpet, backstage and behind-the-scenes coverage surrounding — but not limited to — this year’s Emmys. Yahoo, which boasts 700 million users worldwide, is the first digital partner for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences that is not affiliated with a broadcaster.
