The HBO series is a contender again for top drama honors, an award that has eluded it since it debuted in 2011. TV academy voters rarely give shows in the sci-fi or other genres the ultimate accolade.

This year is shaping up to be one of the most intense, kicked off by the TV Academy’s expansive rule changes, announced in February.

Emmy Rules Changes Bring Overdue Order

Brian Lowry: “On the eve of the Oscars, the Emmys are the winner for ‘best rules changes by an industry award voting body.’ A series of new provisions announced Friday have brought long overdue common sense to the Emmy Awards, imposing some hard-and-fast guidelines (subject to petition, naturally) that will prevent some of the category shopping that has produced strange bedfellows in recent ceremonies.”

Emmys Returning To Sunday Night This Year

Emmys Owe TV Newcomers A Better Chance

The primetime Emmys, bestowed for 66 years, are meant to celebrate excellence in television. But in Emmy’s eyes, excellence too often takes the form of stamina, not the burst of inspiration that may have launched a series and its characters many seasons earlier and since settled into routine. Too often, Emmy celebrates not excellence, but an excellently maintained status quo.

Changing TV Models Put A Price On Prestige

For years, the popular response to the Emmys from network executives was that they were nice — an ego stroke to the talent, but inconsequential to the bottom line. Today, however, there’s a perceived value on prestige, one that HBO was obviously early to exploit, but which others have piled on as well. And that, as much as anything, has helped produce the embarrassment of riches the TV industry currently enjoys, as well as the concerted awards push from new players, including Showtime, AMC, FX and — beyond the traditional TV sphere — Netflix.

Emmys Comedy Race Takes Edgy Turn

When ABC’s Modern Family vies for its fifth consecutive best comedy Emmy award on Monday, not only will it battle the beloved geeks of CBS’s The Big Bang Theory but also a bunch of irreverent, foul-mouthed characters from cable and Netflix. For the first time in Emmy history, networks are outnumbered by cable and online streaming outlets in the coveted best comedy series category, a sign of a growing appetite for comedy free from the confines of network TV.

Broadcast-Cable Emmy Divide Grows Deeper

Almost halfway through the eight-year, $66 million deal between the Television Academy and the four major broadcast networks to carry the Emmys, the broadcasters are as unhappy as they were during the 2010-11 negotiations. They’re back in the longform game, but the drama field — once a stronghold of broadcast shows, such as four-time winners Hill Street Blues, L.A. Law and The West Wing—has become the new battleground. For a third straight year, there is not one commercial broadcast series nominated in the top drama category.

A Few Snubs Won’t Prompt Emmy Changes

Although some broadcast network shows received acting bids, all were snubbed in the best drama series category — eclipsed by cable and online programs that typically produce far few episodes per season than the 22 or so hours cranked out by broadcasters. Is it time for a rules change or two, such as separating longer- and shorter-run series into two categories or maybe expanding the number of drama and comedy series nominees from six to 10?
