The Emmy smackdown between Netflix and HBO has taken another dramatic turn. As the Television Academy announced the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards nominations on Tuesday morning, Netflix came out on top swinging with a whopping 160 nominations, followed by rival HBO in second at 107 nods. HBO’s Watchmen led the programs with 26 nods.

This year’s Emmy nominations highlighted the rising power and reputation of the streaming services — with Netflix and Amazon collecting a combined 70 nods. Television’s diversity was also on display, with each of the top acting categories including at least one minority nominee.
Other top nominees included a pair of ambitious miniseries, Fargo, with 18 bids, and American Horror Story: Coven, with 17. The AIDS drama The Normal Heart received 16 nominations, including best TV movie.
The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards will air Monday, Aug. 25, on NBC, with emcee Seth Meyers, the former Saturday Night Live player and new NBC latenight host. The ceremony, traditionally held on Sunday, was moved to avoid a conflict with NBC’s Sunday Night Football and with MTV’s Video Music Awards.
