Miami-based production company 2C Media cranks out a staggering 10,000 promos a year for shows ranging from 30 Rock to Grey’s Anatomy. It has also developed into a steady supplier of reality shows, including a new one about daily life inside Miami International Airport that’s scheduled to launch on the Travel Channel this fall.

“Even CBS must realize it cannot copyright the idea of 14 contestants living in a house rigged with cameras,” the ABC court papers argue.

Despite their popularity, unscripted shows play understudy to more expensive fare. Reality shows account for just three of the 92 projects on the 2012-13 broadcast development slate, a disproportionate allowance given the enthusiasm of the American TV audience.

The musical chairs competition will join fellow reality show L.A. Complex as the youth-skewing network continues to bulk up on original summer programming.
