The station group’s executives spell out how they are bucking the syndication system with their five-year-old strategy to develop home-grown programming like The List and Right This Minute. “Many in the industry thought we were nuts … and five years later, all of our peers are starting their own programming divisions based on the success that we’re having,” said Brian Lawlor, Scripps SVP, broadcast.
Disney/ABC Home Entertainment and Television Distribution takes over distribution from MGM and clears the viral videos show on the ABC Owned Television Stations Group. MGM’s syndicated video clip show will launch its third season in all of the top 30 DMAs beginning Sept. 16.
Right This Minute, the Monday-Friday video clip show that station groups Cox Media, Raycom and Scripps created in partnership with MagicDust Television, celebrated its 1,000th episode last Friday. The show is distributed by MGM Television and will begin its third season this fall. It will add a new weekend best-of episode on stations including NBC-owned WNBC New York and ABC O&O KABC Los Angeles. The show tapes in Phoenix and is co-hosted by (l-r) Gayle Bass, Nick Calderone, Beth Troutman, Christian Vera and Steven Fabian.
The syndicated video clip show from MGM will now be seen in Washington, Minneapolis, Sacramento, St. Louis, Grand Rapids, Greensboro and Portland and Bangor, both Maine.
The syndicated video-clip show starts its second season with seven new stations, pushing its clearance total to just over 25%.
‘Right This Minute’ Hopes Its Time Has Come
E.W. Scripps, Cox Media Group and Raycom Media are betting other stations will want to air its syndicated video clip show, in which five TV news vets riff and report on whatever the producers can find of interest on the Web and elsewhere. The mix of news and entertainment is produced as two back-to-back half-hours, giving stations the option of splitting up the episodes into different time slots or buying the show as a single half-hour.
