MGM Television’s syndicated viral video program adds a weekend edition and continues its national rollout, adding 41 stations in 38 markets, including New York (WNBC), Los Angeles (KABC) and Chicago (WCIU-WCUU).
The daily series searches out the best viral videos and the stories behind them. Its staff introduces audiences to the newest Web videos as they break, often before the videos go viral.
A few words of caution for those enterprising station groups deciding to produce their own programming rather than buy syndicated fare. Think beyond just news; be merciless — if it doesn’t work, kill it and move on; and stay focused on building a strong, sustainable show for your own markets before even thinking about offering it to stations elsewhere.
The hour-long RightThisMinute that combines on-air journalism with the interactivity of social media, using the Internet, mobile, social media and citizen journalists will debut on select stations this fall with plans for national distribution in 2012.
