What Makes ‘Mad Men’ So Buzzworthy

Sunday night at 9 p.m. the AMC drama Mad Men returns after a 17-month absence, and based on all the hype and publicity it’s receiving, you might guess the show is among the highest-rated on television. It’s not. Though Men has won four Emmy awards for best drama, its audience is modest even by cable standards. Robert J. Thompson, founding director of the Bleier Center for Television and Popular Culture at Syracuse University, talks about Men‘s wide appeal, whether its long layoff will hurt ratings, and why AMC’s The Walking Dead owes Men a debt of gratitude.
