Broadcasters won’t be hampered by remote working conditions for election night 2020, and they have a bevy of new graphics and augmented reality tools to help them tell the story. Above, Broadcasters can make complex data easy for viewers to grasp through augmented reality objects generated by Brainstorm graphics using real-time data from different sources. A Punt, a regional channel in Spain, covered municipal elections, and this interactive map shows the winning party in each town, with detailed results for the seats won in each town are shown on the chart of the left side. The bars on the bottom show a rundown of all the cities, in alphabetical order, with the results in real time.

TV stations and networks are learning that to take full advantage of the cloud, they need to overhaul the way they produce news rather than try to replicate hardware-based workflows on a cloud platform.

Sinclair and its One Media sister company will kick off a series of virtual events about monetizing NextGen TV with ATSC 3.0 Monetization 101 on Tuesday at 1 p.m. ET. Live virtual events for broadcasters this week focus on revenue as well as technology. They include an Akamai webinar on securing Javascripts, a Cisco presentation about Precision Timed Protocol in SMPTE 2110 Fabrics and the Sports Video Group’s annual College Sports Summit. Despite pushing newsrooms temporarily into mostly remote production, set design vendors say COVID-19 won’t have a lasting effect on where sets were heading before the pandemic. They say viewers are likely to see more LED panels and walls, virtual sets and augmented and virtual reality usage in news studios. Our decision today is based on that same principle, and I would call on the organizers of IBC to follow suit, remove any uncertainty, and cancel the event for 2020.”

NAB Show Express opens Tuesday and runs through Thursday with virtual panel sessions, keynotes and exhibition. Ross Video kicks off its Ross Live series of virtual events on Tuesday, while Sony Professional Products convenes the first of three Technology Tuesdays and TAG Video Systems continues its series with Live Production and Multiviewing in the Cloud. Digital Nirvana addresses monitoring and advanced workflows for captioning and translation; Gates Air considers FM SFNs and AWS convenes three days of presentations. Business motives, including increased utilization and flexibility plus easier maintenance and scalability, are driving TV’s move to software. With SMPTE’s ST2110 suite and other standards reaching maturity and diffusing into the marketplace, it’s now becoming practical to support entire live production workloads on virtual machines.

The massive NBCUniversal Boston Media Center in Needham, Mass., houses the company’s NBC and Telemundo stations plus regional cable news and sports networks in a new $125 million, 160,000-square foot headquarters. “It’s a complete game-changer,” says one GM of the greenfield build.

New England Sports Network recently tripled its news content, producing live programming from 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. daily. It also did the unthinkable, automating production of its unpredictable post-game shows. An entire system from Ross Video, including camera robotics, switcher, graphics and NRCS, made the moves possible. 

Multiviewers are in the midst of a rapid evolutionary phase spurred by the proliferation of signals that need monitoring and the IP transition. As the need for control across multiviewer screens increases, the technology is also becoming more integrated with other pieces of equipment.

Social media platforms are fast evolving, and newsrooms that have come to rely on them are turning to new tools to keep up. Automation technology is fast evolving to keep up with demand for content on multiple platforms. Vendors say it helps eliminate redundant tasks and integrates as many platforms as possible without posing a threat to jobs or creative control.

Developments in TV news graphics have seen a host of improvements from better real-time flexibility to more streamlined workflows and even monetization prospects.
