AT&T used the collegiate national championship football game in Dallas Monday night as a backdrop to the operator’s first live demonstration of LTE broadcast technology. Also known as LTE multicast, the company worked with partners Ericsson, Qualcomm, ESPN, Samsung and MobiTV to deliver two channels of streaming video and one channel of data to 40 LTE-broadcast enabled Samsung Galaxy Note 3 devices.
Samsung and Sony are escalating their fight for the attention — and dollars — of TV buyers. Both electronics giants will open up special areas in Best Buy stores to showcase 4K TVs and other home entertainment products. Sony arguably has home-field advantage, given its long legacy as a premium TV manufacturer. Samsung, however, is the No. 1 TV vendor in the world, and this new partnership can only help cement that position.
Samsung Posts First Quarterly Profit Drop In 2 Years
Under its partnership with Comcast Corp., the country’s largest cable company, Samsung TVs would get 4K content through an app running on the Internet-connected TV, bypassing Comcast’s set-top boxes.
Retailer H&M will run an ad during Fox’s telecast of the Super Bowl XLVIII next month that will mark a technology first on TV advertising’s biggest stage — some viewers will be able to buy featured merch directly from their TV remotes, if they have 2012 and 2013 Samsung Smart TVs connected to the Internet.
Former ATSC Chairman John Godfrey, VP communications policy and regulatory affairs at Samsung, was elected to come back and serve on the board again. He’s joined by Mark Eyer of Sony and John Taylor of LG Electronics USA, both of whom were elected to a second term.
On Friday, 19 organizations filed 10 proposals for ATSC 3.0, the next-generation television standard. Filers included LG, Harris Broadcast, Samsung and Sony. One company of notable interest is the nation’s largest TV station owner: Sinclair Broadcast Group.
Samsung has acquired Israeli-based streaming-media startup Boxee. The acquisition was presumably made so that Samsung can add the company’s cloud-based DVR to its smart TVs and other connected devices. The Marker reports that the purchase price was $30 million. That sum roughly matches Boxee’s total funding — which is $26.5 million, according to the company’s website. The deal reportedly brings all Boxee employees — estimated around 45 people — to work for Samsung.
Univision is rolling out its TV Everywhere service, UVideos, as an app on smart TVs and connected devices (including Internet-enabled Blu-ray players) manufactured by electronics giant Samsung.
