A strong start to the Major League Baseball season by two teams in the Bay Area is helping the San Francisco media market to healthy gains over a year ago. TV spending is up low- to mid-single-digits versus a year ago, with pricing about flat, and baseball is one reason why.

Buyers will pay a premium for sports telecasts, with all the local teams making recent playoff runs. Also, both foreign and domestic auto spending is up.

Buyers expect a strong holiday season for television with department stores spending heavily. And the Giants’ playoff run is boosting both TV and radio.

The Bay area is home to Silicon Valley and the tech-savvy market was an early Internet adopter. One of the nation’s longest established newspaper sites, SFGate.com, rules the roost here, but its rivals and some hyperlocal newcomers have made San Franciso-Oakland-San Jose a competitive market.

The two former Multicultural Television stations are being sold by the trust that took control of them after they ran into financial trouble. The buying group is headed by Ted Bartley. The price was approximately $20 million, according to sources.
