Just as there have been advances in the field of medicine over the past 55 years that have resulted in people living longer, so, too, have there been changes and improvements at General Hospital that have kept the long-running soap opera thriving in today’s crowded TV landscape.
Despite rumors that Days of Our Lives was nearing extinction, NBC has renewed the venerable soap opera for a record 52nd season. The pickup comes a month after the sudser fired co-head writer Dena Higley and replaced her with General Hospital vet Ron Carlivati.
The long-running NBC daytime soap was rumored to be on the chopping block earlier this month after the network signed Fox News alum Megyn Kelly and offered her a daytime news program. But on Wednesday, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt cautioned soap fans that the fate of Days hasn’t been settled yet.

Nixon created, wrote and produced the long-running ABC daytime serials One Life to Live and All My Children, which were canceled in 2011 as the network bowed to the reality that soaps had faded as a daytime TV force. All My Children aired for nearly 41 years, while One Life to Live made it to 44 years.
Days Of Our Lives, which marked its 50th anniversary this season, has been renewed for next season, which will be the long-running daytime drama’s 51st. The pickup, which may include an option for an additional year, keeps NBC in the daytime soap game as Days is the last remaining afternoon drama on its schedule.
It’s looking good that the sands in Days of Our Lives‘ iconic hourglass will continue to flow. NBC is hopeful that it will successfully renew its contract with surviving soap, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last November.
ABC’s General Hospital will present not one but two episodes live. The special broadcasts will air Friday, May 15, and Monday, May 18, just as the May sweeps rating period is drawing to a close.

In three months, new episodes of All My Children and One Life to Live will debut on The Online Network, an Internet-based platform launching in January. The new Internet service announced in July that it was bringing the two soap operas back to life.
