10.4 million unique visitors logged onto the websites of TV stations in states affected by Hurricane Sandy between Oct. 28 and Oct. 30. This was more than double their normal traffic.
This year’s RTDNA-Hofstra University Survey appears to support the thesis advanced last year — that the Web has really matured in TV and more and more in radio as well. We didn’t find a single TV station (that runs local news) that doesn’t have a website. This is the first time there have been no holdouts in any size market.
Nielsen research indicates that stations can use their Web sites to notably expand reach of their news content, helping drive cross-platform sales. The data, which looked at the ABC affiliates in Seattle and Portland, Oregon, shows that by using one metric, each received at least a 3% bump in the 25-to-54 demo in the May 2011 sweeps period.
