The show from Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution in its second season is up 14% percent nationally in its primary demo, women 25-54, compared to last season.
While much has been made of millennials leaving traditional linear TV programming, some platforms have done better than others in retaining those young viewers — specifically syndicated TV shows. Looking at September — the start of the TV season — syndication TV programming pulled in a Nielsen average 0.4 rating among 18-34 viewers — the same rating as September 2014. By way of comparison, other traditional linear TV platforms have had declines.

Syndicators Busy With Shows For Next Fall
Among the new offerings for first-run syndication in the works or being pitched for 2016-17 is Ice & Coco (above), which got a three-week test this summer on Fox-owned stations in eight markets. Another show that just finished a test is Debmar-Mercury’s The T.D. Jakes Show. More projects on the drawing board include a talker with Harry Connick Jr. from NBCU, Daily Mail TV from CBS, and the possible return of two former TV judges, Glenda Hatchett and Joe Brown. There are also two game shows being discussed: Sony’s Chain Reaction and a daily version of Scientific Games’ Monopoly Millionaires’ Club.

It’s been a humbling stretch for the heart surgeon who built his own successful syndicated talk show. Critics, including some in Congress, scolded the hyperactive health evangelist for promoting questionable diet aids he’s since sworn off. In April, a group of 10 doctors urged that he be removed from Columbia University’s medical faculty, accusing him of promoting “quack treatments.” His show has lost half its viewers over the past five years. His show begins its seventh season today.
WTMJ Drops 3 P.M. News For New Syndie
The Milwaukee NBC affiliate is replacing its 3 p.m. weekday newscast with a new syndicated lifestyle/talk show hosted by Tyra Banks. FABLife premieres Monday at 3 p.m. GM Joe Poss said Thursday that the decision to drop the 3 p.m. newscast and add a syndicated show had been in the works since last year, before the station was acquired by E.W. Scripps Co.
Cater Lee, the broadcast group’s senior director of TV program development for the Scripps broadcast division from 2011 to 2014, is returning. Scripps SVP of Broadcasting Brian Lawlor says: “She has a tremendous instinct for what makes a successful show; has the connections to get the right people in the right spots; and has broad experience in taking a show from its early development concepts all the way to national syndication.”
Among women 25-54 in New York, the series, which featured an interview with Caitlyn Jenner in its fall premiere Tuesday, scored an 3.1 rating/20 share, its biggest debut ever in that important demo, gaining 10 share points over the Steve Harvey lead-in.
Most years there’s a notable trend among the new syndication offerings, from talkers to judge programs to game shows. This year, what’s notable may be just how unlike anything else the new syndie shows are. Three will debut this month (including FABLife), with the syndication season officially getting underway on Tuesday.

KNBC Los Angeles follows in New York’s WNBC’s footsteps by moving Access Hollywood Live from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., where it won’t air “live” at all. The latest move could be indicative of a possible NBCUniversal’s plan to share production resources across E! News and AHL since the latter show could potentially require less staffers to produce if it’s no longer airing live in any markets.
Syndicators Overhaul Shows For Stronger Fall
Producers and distributors are hard at work revamping and tweaking magazines, game shows and talkers to improve ratings come September. Nothing’s off limits, including sets, hosts, formats and staff. Case in point: Access Hollywood, which is getting a new set behind those doors.
