Burning Questions For TV’s Biggest Watchdog

It’s the best-known protest organization against graphic TV sex and violence. Those headlines about that long Sons of Anarchy sex montage? The furor over ABC’s Charlie Brown repeat leading into a Scandal sex scene? The content protests against Fox’s Family Guy, VH1’s Dating Naked and CBS’s Stalker? All the work of the Parents Television Council, a 19-year-old oft-outraged Los Angeles-based organization that’s probably the best known remaining anti-indecency group around. PTC’s President Tim Winter anweres a range of questions about the group and its efforts.

PTC Launches ‘#NoIndecencyFCC’ Week

The watchdog group’s president, Tim Winter: “We are focusing on #NoIndecencyFCC to let the FCC know that we consider its proposal to limit broadcast indecency complaints extremely troublesome,” said PTC President Tim Winter. “Only pursuing so-called ‘egregious’ complaints from the public about indecent TV or radio content will lead to broadcasters pushing the decency limits even further — including the airing of nudity or harsh profanity when millions of children are in the audience,” he said.

PTC Slams Fox’s ‘American Dad’ Episode

The group says the April 14 episode violated the broadcast decency law and calls on its members to file formal FCC complaints. “Every Fox affiliate that aired this American Dad episode should be held accountable for violating the law,” says the group’s president, Tim Winter.

PTC Asks FCC For V-Chip Reform

The watchdog group cites three recent studies to support its claims of flaws in the TV content ratings system and asks that the commission “begin a proceeding on new tools for parents.”

PTC Files High Court Brief In ‘Expletives’ Case

In an amicus brief with the Supreme Court, the watchdog group Parents Television Council says “the TV networks will not halt their crusade for the ‘right’ to air f-words and graphic nudity in front of children. Without Supreme Court intervention, the FCC stands to lose all Congressionally-mandated authority over indecent broadcast television and radio content.”
