Through 12 weeks of the latenight TV season, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is averaging 3.1 million viewers, second to NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (3.9 million viewers) and just ahead of ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live (2.5 million viewers). But more alarming for CBS is the widening gap between The Late Show and The Tonight Show. When Colbert debuted in September, Fallon topped him by 364,000 viewers — a gap that’s grown to 1.5 million viewers for the week of Dec. 14.
He’s one of NBC’s biggest success stories — keeping The Tonight Show at the top of the latenight ratings with bouncy show tunes and campy games. Now Jimmy Fallon is also one of NBC’s biggest worries.
