NewBay Media, publisher of Broadcasting & Cable and Multichannel News among other titles, has been acquired by London-based Future Publishing for $13.8 million Future said it was attracted to NewBay for its complementary B2B titles, particularly in the telecom, music, and electronics spaces, as well as the prospect of expanding its footprint in the U.S.

Syd Silverman, the former publisher and owner of Variety, died of a sudden illness in Boca Raton, Fla., on Sunday. He was 85. Silverman inherited the role of publisher in 1950 and held that title until 1987, when he sold the paper. During his years at Variety, he made sure the coverage reflected the many changes in the entertainment industry, including the revolutions in cable and pay-TV, independent film pre-sales, financial interest and syndication rules for TV programs, satellite TV, home video and digital media.

Negotiations for a sale have apparently been going on for several months between the companies. Condé Nast CEO Bob Sauerberg and artistic director Anna Wintour brought in UBS Investment Bank to oversee the purchase from Eldbridge Industries, represented by Moelis & Co. and Goldman Sachs. There’s a possibility negotiations have stalled over the asking price.
Min was responsible for a dramatic turnaround at the magazine, but now she’ll move on to join parent company Eldridge Industries to develop a media investment strategy. Her departure could signal a sale of the magazine or future acquisitions as well. Matthew Belloni will step in to Min’s role.
