Dish-Univision Legal Battle Heats Up

The satellite operator is suing Univision in federal court, alleging that it distributed Mexican soccer games via Facebook in violation of their carriage agreement. Last month, Univision moved to dismiss the suit. Univision’s 2Q Revenue Dips 4%

Spanish-language media giant Univision Communications, which has reportedly been wooed by media magnate John Malone as it mulls an IPO, has reported a 4% dip in second quarter 2017 revenue of $764.9 million compared to $800.3 million in the same time frame last year. Its net income or profit for the second quarter ending June 30 rose 5% to $106 million compared to $74.7 million for the same period in 2016.

Tonia O’Connor, Univision’s newly appointed CRO, says some of the former Gawker verticals, now called Gizmodo Media, will get shows on Fusion TV. “What we’re really focused on is the magic that can happen when you take digital audiences and convert them to television,” she says. Vice, BuzzFeed and Vox Media are pushing into TV. Dish Sues Univision Over Soccer Streaming

Now we know why Dish has taken Univision to court. It all relates to the Spanish-language programmer’s announcement in February to stream all 46 matches of the Liga MX season via Facebook Live, including the playoffs. Dish filed its lawsuit against Univision earlier this month under seal, but a heavily redacted version of the complaint obtained by Cablefax shows that Dish believes its affiliate agreement with Univision expressly prohibits the programmer from “allowing linear services to be distributed for free via the Internet or a wireless cellular provider.”

Univision Set To Fight Defamation Suit

Univision Communications Inc. said it will fight a new defamation lawsuit over a Deadspin story the company acquired last year when it purchased Gawker Media’s blogs in a bankruptcy auction. The plaintiff in the suit, Las Vegas oddsmaker RJ Bell, is being represented by Charles Harder, the same lawyer that successfully sued Gawker on behalf of Hulk Hogan and forced it into bankruptcy. Details Surface On 3.0 Audio Watermark Test

The Pearl TV business alliance of eight major broadcast groups; Fox; NBC’s WVIT Hartford, Conn.; Univision; and Verance are working together on a test of the software company’s audio watermark as part of their existing ATSC 1.0 transmissions. The 3.0 audio watermark is compatible and in 3.0, it will enable “the foundational data protocol that triggers … interactivity, personalization and even advanced emergency alerting” on ATSC 3.0 receivers, the parties say.
