Video Platform Vimeo’s CEO To Step Down

Video-hosting platform Vimeo’s CEO Anjali Sud will leave the company next month to pursue other opportunities. Sud, a former Amazon executive, who joined the company nine years ago as director of marketing, was at the helm of Vimeo for the past six years. Board member Adam Gross, a former Salesforce and Dropbox executive, will take over as interim CEO, effective Sept. 1, while the company looks for a permanent replacement.

Vimeo Slashes Staff By 11% In Second Wave Of Layoffs In 6 Months

Vimeo has chopped down its workforce by 11% in a new sweep of layoffs, the video hosting platform said Wednesday in a company blog post. This is another layoff round for Vimeo, which cut its employee staff by 6% back in July 2022.

Anti-Piracy Proposal Panned By Pinterest, Vimeo, Others

Companies including Pinterest, Etsy and Vimeo are urging lawmakers to reject an anti-piracy proposal that would effectively require web companies to use as-yet-undeveloped filtering tools. The proposal “would inject uncertainty” into online copyright law, while also posing a risk to users’ privacy and their ability to access information, the companies and other opponents say in a letter sent this week to lawmakers. The letter comes in response to the proposed Strengthening Measures to Advance Rights Technologies (SMART) Copyright Act of 2022, introduced earlier this month by Sens. Mozilla Leads Push For FCC To Reinstate Net Neutrality

Tech companies led by Mozilla are urging the FCC to swiftly reinstate net neutrality rules stripped away under the Trump administration. In a letter to FCC Acting Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel on Friday, ADT, Dropbox, Eventbrite, Reddit, Vimeo and Wikimedia joined Mozilla, the maker of the Firefox web browser, in calling net neutrality “critical for preserving the internet as a free and open medium that promotes innovation and spurs economic growth.”

Vimeo Enters Original-Content Biz This Week

Vimeo, the video-sharing web service owned by IAC, will release Tuesday three new episodes of High Maintenance, a Web series about the many customers of a Brooklyn marijuana dealer. The new episodes — each less than 20 minutes long — are $2 apiece, or $8 for a set that includes three more that will be released in January. This is the first time that Vimeo has funded the series directly and represents the company’s first push into original content, following a recent trend among larger digital companies such as Yahoo, Netflix and Amazon.
