Sinclair’s Ernie Ensign says while there are numerous long-term upshots to adopting cloud switching, the group is cautiously taking its time with multiple proofs-of-concept for at least another year. Meanwhile, at least one vendor is pursuing a dramatically different approach to cloud switching. In Amsterdam this week, there was plenty of talk about broadcasters’ ongoing transition to IP and the cloud, along with the supply chain issues and labor shortages hampering it, but most people were too grateful to see old friends, colleagues and clients to complain.

While it’s not yet feasible to combine rundown-based computer systems favored by newsrooms with digital teams’ storycentric content management systems, progress is being made in communication between the systems and with third-party software, bringing the two groups closer together. Broadcasters know they’re headed to the cloud, but when it comes to live production, they have big questions about latency affecting workflow and viewer experience. Vizrt dispelled those notions recently when it gathered producers at a beach house in Los Angeles to try out its Live Production in the Cloud solutions. The verdict: You’re going to start seeing [this] all over the place. It just makes too much sense.” Watch the video here.

Tech executives from Warner Bros. Discovery, Sinclair, Hearst, Vizrt and Vice Media Group told a TVNewsCheck webinar last week the public cloud’s appeal is growing for content sharing and archiving workflows but cautioned the entire metadata process needs more care and attention to maximize cloud storage’s advantages.

With less hardware to demonstrate and a much-reduced exhibition floor footprint, the first post-pandemic NAB Show pointed the way to a future where software demos of cloud, IP and hybrid environments have become the new norm.
