Cyber Threats Have Broadcasters Hacked Off
While politically motivated hacks such as the ones that may have disrupted France’sTV5Monde and WBOC Salisbury, Md., are scary, they aren’t likely to be typical. Stations and networks are more likely to be hit by garden variety malware and malicious code intrusions because where there is IP, there is vulnerability. An area of particular security concern to broadcasters is the nation’s Emergency Alert System, which is increasingly dependent on networked and IP-based services.
WBOC, Atlantic Broadband Set Retrans Deal
Atlantic Broadband, the local cable provider serving viewers in Talbot, Queen Anne’s and Kent counties in Maryland, has returned CBS affiliate WBOC Salisbury, Md., TV to its channel lineup after reaching a long-term retrans agreement. The station has been off the cable system since late December.
WBOC Website, Twitter Account Hacked
The Salisbury, Md., CBS affiliate was hacked by an outside group, posting pro-extreme Islamic messages on the website. “We have managed to take back control of WBOC.com,” station manager Craig Jahelka said. “We have contacted Twitter to let them know that our account has been hacked, but they haven’t done anything yet.” The postings to the site were from a group calling itself the CyberCaliphate.
