WSYX, WCMH, WWHO and WTTE are now broadcasting with ATSC 3.0 technology.
All three major Columbus, Ohio, stations debuted in 1949: WLWC (which became WCMH) in April, and WBNS and WTVN (later WSYX) in October. Looking back 70 years later, television’s impact is hard to overstate.
The interactive watch party hosted by WCMH, Nexstar’s NBC affiliate in Columbus, Ohio, was also made available to all the Nexstar TV stations. “So if they were watching on desktop, they could click the options with their mouse, or if they were watching on their phone, they could tap the screen to vote,” said Haley Townsend, WCMH’s digital director.
Nexstar’s NBC affiliate has more than a million Facebook actions over its next nearest competitor. David Ciliberti, WCMH’s news director, says finding the right stories that everybody connects to at the same time is the key to generating interaction. Michael King, WCMH’s digital director, says news tips, videos and pictures from Facebook users help the station stay ahead in the market. “By leveraging it on digital first, we associated our brand with the story before our broadcast competitors.”

WCMH, WSYX, WTTE, WBNS and WOSU, along with radio, newspaper, online and outdoor media are collaborating with business and labot to create a “roadblock” for a day-long effort to flood the market with United Way messaging and stories.
Stations started dabbling with inserting newscasts into their diginet subchannels about five years ago and they say they expect the practice to become more pervasive as more stations recognize the revenue and promotional potential. Among the experiments is producing newscasts that air at non-traditional times — 7-9 a.m. or 9 p.m. — when primary channels are airing network programming.

Ohio NBC affiliates have partnered to present the first televised statewide debate of Issue 2, a referendum on a controversial new law that made changes to a variety of government laws and policies.The debate from Columbus on Oct. 25 will be carried live on WDTN Dayton, WCMH Columbus, WLWT Cincinnati, WKYC Cleveland, WLIO Lima, WNWO Toledo, WTOV Wheeling-Steubenville, WFMJ Youngstown and WHIZ Zanesville. It will also be streamed live on each of the station’s websites.
