‘Live in the D’ Is Live, Local Content For WDIV
WDIV Detroit Gives Local Show An Overhaul
The Graham Media-owned NBC affiliate is launching its mid-morning lifestyle show, Live in the D, Monday with a new hosts and a faster pace. The show will air at 10 a.m., an hour earlier than it used to.
With the addition of Graham Media’s NBC affiliate, the Weigel Broadcasting diginet will be available in 98 of the top 100 DMAs.
The Graham Media-owned stations have issued press releases saying they are scheduled to be pulled from the satellite service on July 22 unless a carriage deal can be reached.

Viewers Use New App To Track Weather
The StormPins weather crowdsourcing app turns viewers into “junior meteorologists” by letting them mark, or “pin,” severe weather, as well as the damage it leaves behind, with photos and video on neighborhood maps so other folks know what’s heading their way. Emily Barr, CEO of Graham Media, is such a big believer in StormPins that the company invested in the app. “It really allows local television stations to build a kind of sense of community and reinforce the idea that viewers get to contribute.”
Stations Investigate Football Helmet Safety
One of the benefits of my job is that as I travel around the country working with TV stations, I see story ideas that spread like kudzu from one market to the next. One station in one city finds some success with the story, others hear about it, copy the idea and localize it. I find most of these cut and paste ideas pop up around “sweeps” months and most are awful. Here’s one that isn’t. It is worth looking at where you are and it may keep some kid from getting hurt.

On Friday afternoon, Post-Newsweek Stations completed retrans negotiations with Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks with no disruption of service, according to sources. The stations involved included Brighthouse carriage of CBS affiliate WKMG Orlando, Fla., and Time Warner Cable’s carriage of ABC affil KSAT San Antonio, Texas. Post-Newsweek also completed agreements with smaller cable systems for its WDIV Detroit (NBC) and with a very small system in Houston for carriage of KPRC (also NBC).
In the Motor City, where sites run by WDIV and WJBK outdraw those of Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press, local media outlets see it as their mission to boost morale and the image of the ailing market.
Theose are the television station winners of the NAB Education Foundation’s annual Service to America Awards. They and the radio winners will be honored on June 6 in Washington at a dinner where Jeff Bridges and Target Corp. will also be recognized.
