Despite a run of strong ratings at the Tampa ABC affiliate, general manager Rich Pegram has been fired, station insiders confirmed. Executives from owner E.W. Scripps Co. came to Tampa from Cincinnati Wednesday to handle the situation. It’s unclear whether Pegram’s contract was up for renewal or had expired.

Sources say that the Scripps-owned NBC affiliate in Tampa, Fla., will be losing its local master control operations department. Master control operations are being moved to a Scripps corporate central operations hub, based in Minnesota.

Plus, the gear’s inexpensive cost means stations don’t have to flip a coin to decide where to send a satellite truck. With 20 years of TV news management on this resume, McFarland is joining the Scripps ABC affiliate from the ABC O&Os’ flagship in New York, WABC, where he was assistant news director.

WFLA, WFTS, WTSP and WTVT began planning a year ago to make sure they would be ready when the Republican National Convention gets underway from Aug. 27 to 30. The preparation includes figuring out how to deal with the heavy security that encases political conventions and devising contingencies plans in case that security is breached or if other emergencies arise. Nobody is saying exactly what the extra effort is costing, although one station said its budget is running “north of six figures.”
