Anti-Defamation League chief Jonathan Greenblatt on Tuesday called out actress and comedian Whoopi Goldberg for what he said were “offensive” remarks on the Holocaust.
The moderator said she and her colleagues on the ABC show would “keep having tough conversations” as she added that she listened to those who reached out to her.
ABC’s decision to suspend Whoopi Goldberg from The View for two weeks for her remarks about the Holocaust has opened the network up to criticism that its response derailed a teachable moment for the nation about a sensitive topic often misunderstood and seldom discussed on air.
The action came a day after Goldberg’s comment during a discussion on The View that race was not a factor in the Holocaust. Goldberg apologized hours later and again on Tuesday’s morning episode, but the original remark drew condemnation from several prominent Jewish leaders. “While Whoopi has apologized, I’ve asked her to take time to reflect and learn about the impact of her comments. The entire ABC News organization stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, family and communities,” ABC News President Kim Godwin said in a statement.

ABC’s The View is without one of its co-hosts this week, after Whoopi Goldberg tested positive for COVID-19. Joy Behar disclosed the news on the program Monday. “Whoopi unfortunately tested positive over the break, but she will hopefully be back next week,” Behar said. “Since she is vaxxed and boosted, her symptoms have been very, very mild, but we are being super cautious.”

Reports surfaced today claiming Whoopi Goldberg referred to Barbara Walters as a “cranky 85-year-old woman” during a test screening Thursday for new View co-hosts, but ABC insists it never happened. “Someone has tried to stir this pot before.
