The Scripps-owned Buffalo, N.Y., ABC affiliate hires Robert Heverling, an assistant news director at WOIO Cleveland, to oversee its news operations.

Sources say that WKBW’s News Director Lisa Polster, the ND at Scripp’s newly acquired ABC affiliate, just inked a deal to become the morning executive producer at Media General’s CBS affil WIVB.

Social media has proved an invaluable tool to Buffalo, N.Y., TV news operations throughout the week-long ordeal that started last Tuesday when early-season storms dumped seven feet of snow in some areas. As the snow piled up, the stations went wall-to-wall with their coverage, but were short-staffed and sometimes unable to put ENG vehicles on snow-clogged streets. Reports from viewers started pouring in as soon as the storm hit, providing a bounty of user-generated content.

The E.W. Scripps announced this moring that it has a deal to buy two Granite Broadcasting stations — ABC affiliate WKBW and MNT affiliate WMYD Detroit — for $110 million in cash.

Despite the fact that representatives from E.W. Scripps Co. toured WKBW Buffalo, N.Y.’s operations last week, broadcasting industry insiders say don’t assume anything. Scripps, according to several industry reports, is one of several media groups reportedly interested in Granite Broadcasting Corp.’s eight TV stations, including WKBW. Granite officials declined to comment. The tour, insiders say, was just that — a tour.

The broadcast industry veteran with more than 40 years of service will leave the Granite ABC affiliate on June 30. Prior to leading WKBW, Ransom was the general sales manager of Granite’s WPTA Fort Wayne, Ind., and president-GM of WTVH Syracuse, N.Y.

The former Springfield, Mo., news chief will head news operations at Granite’s Buffalo, N.Y., ABC affiliate starting Sept. 20.

John Di Sciullo, news director at the Buffalo, N.Y., ABC affiliate, and a mainstay at the station for nearly 30 years, is moving across town to WBBZ, a Me-TV affiliate, as executive director of production and promotion.

Time Warner Cable dropped ABC affiliate WKBW Buffalo, N.Y., from its system in Hornell, N.Y. The MSO already carries the feed for Elmira, N.Y.-based ABC affil WENY in Hornell, and said it refused demands from station owner Granite Broadcasting that it pay for duplicate broadcast channels.

The Granite-owned ABC affiliate in Buffalo, N.Y., will switch its hub/master control operations to an out-of-town company, Encompass Digital Media of Atlanta. The changeover, which is expected to result in about 10 lost jobs, is expected to be completed by early October.
