Interoperability got a big boost in December 2017 with the publication of SMPTE’s 2110 suite of standards for handling professional media over managed IP networks. Equipment manufacturers and software developers are moving forward quickly to build ST 2110-compliant products. The TV landscape is experiencing a period of rapid evolution in terms of technology, business realities and consumption, and this year’s IBC Convention looks to deliver fresh insights. WMTV went live from a new 32,000-square-foot facility in Madison, Wis., with its entire operation in late October 2016. Television broadcasters may wish to leverage IP technology, but they cannot simply abandon their paid-for baseband infrastructures. Rather, most will look for ways to introduce islands of IP into their existing workflows with the help of IP gateways. Four early applications for IP in this type of hybrid environment have emerged.
