WTVJ Reporter Fired Over Edited 911 Call

The Miami NBC O&O has acknowledged that it made the same questionable edits to George Zimmerman’s call to police that were widely attacked when the network aired a similarly misleading clip on the Today show last month. Jeff Burnside, a 13-year station veteran, was fired and two other employees were disciplined.

NBC Must Run Romney Ad It Wanted Pulled

NBC-owned WTVJ Miami is reportedly continuing to air a Mitt Romney ad that the network has asked Romney to pull, prompting charges of hypocrisy. But the situation isn’t particularly surprising since broadcasters are legally required to run any ads candidates present — as is. NBC and former Nightly News anchor Tom Brokaw asked Romney’s campaign to drop the ad — which consists almost entirely of a clip from a 1997 Nightly News broadcast discussing then House Speaker Newt Gingrich’s reprimand for ethics violations.

Media Try Mobile, Hyperlocal To Win In Miami

With its glamour and Latino flair, media players in Miami, a market characterized by an audience fragmented by culture and language, rely on different strategies — from hyperlocal to mobile — to draw visitors and prosper. Market leader The Miami Herald, with English and Spanish sites, has turned to hyperlocal, offering some 45 specialized sites based on community and subject matter. And Fox affiliate WSVN has tripled its mobile traffic in the past year.

NBC O&Os Launch 3 More 24/7 News Channel

Starting this week, NBC is launching three more 24-hour news multicast channels on WTVJ Miami, KXAS Dallas and its trio of California stations — KNBC Los Angeles, KNTV San Francisco and KNSD San Diego. WTVJ will also add an hour-long newscast at 5 p.m. to replace a half-hour newscast at 7on its main channel. It’s all part of promises that Comcast made to the FCC to win its approval of its takeover of NBCU in January.
