Fox’s WTVT Tampa won first place in the large market category in TVNewsCheck’s inaugural Social Media Excellence Awards. Its news director reveals how the station uses the natural beauty and character of the area to heighten user engagement.
To honor innovative, creative and effective use of social media, this year’s NewsTECHForum on Dec. 10 will present the first Social Media Excellent Awards to WTVT Tampa, Fla.; KCCI Des Moines, Iowa; Josh Johnson of WSFA Montgomery, Ala.; and Kristen Hampton of WBTV Charlotte, N.C. After accepting their awards, winners will participate in a panel discussion moderated by Kim Wilson of Social News Desk.

Chip Carter, the longtime sports director at Fox O&O WTVT Tampa, Fla., announced his retirement during the station’s 5 p.m. newscast Tuesday. He has been with Fox 13 for 28 years, and his last day on air will be Feb. 26.
Since October 2014, six anchors across the market have left TV news behind. Between them, they represent more than 140 years on the air in Tampa Bay. They include longtime personalities like Wilson, Gayle Sierens, Denise White and Brendan McLaughlin, who left WFTS earlier this month. Each had been in the Tampa market more than two decades.
