While consumers with GPS-enabled smartphones expect real-time weather reports down to the street-corner level, station meteorologists say it’s not that simple. Most of what one gets from apps is just model data that hasn’t been subject to human interpretation. Chip Carter, the longtime sports director at Fox O&O WTVT Tampa, Fla., announced his retirement during the station’s 5 p.m. newscast Tuesday. He has been with Fox 13 for 28 years, and his last day on air will be Feb. 26.
Since October 2014, six anchors across the market have left TV news behind. Between them, they represent more than 140 years on the air in Tampa Bay. They include longtime personalities like Wilson, Gayle Sierens, Denise White and Brendan McLaughlin, who left WFTS earlier this month. Each had been in the Tampa market more than two decades.
