DMA 20: SACRAMENTO, CA

Elliott Troshinsky To Retire As KCRA-KQCA GM

The local broadcaster caps a five-decade career including 20 years leading Hearst Television’s NBC-MNT duopoly in Sacramento, Calif.

Elliott Troshinsky, a broadcast industry leader who has served since 2000 as president and general manager of KCRA and KQCA, Hearst Television’s NBC and MyNetworkTV affiliates in the Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto, Calif., market  (DMA 20), will retire on June 30.

Troshinsky, whose successor at KCRA-KQCA will be named at a later date, caps a career in television broadcasting that began in the early 1970s and which took him to TV stations in, among other markets, Philadelphia, Kansas City and Miami. He ultimately settled in California’s capital region, where he served over the past two decades with Hearst Television in one of the group’s largest TV markets.

“Elliott is a consummate broadcaster who has always set the bar high for localism, quality journalism and community engagement,” said Hearst Television President Jordan Wertlieb. “For over 60 years, KCRA has been known as the station where the news comes first. Under Elliott’s leadership, he and his team have built upon this rich history and have positioned KCRA and KQCA for a very bright future.”

“I’m truly blessed to have had a long career in an industry that I love and am grateful that it culminated with Hearst Television, the ‘best in class’ in the broadcast industry,” Troshinsky said.

In the recent February sweeps ratings period, KCRA continued its news-ratings winning streak, earning No. 1 in every newscast in Nielsen households and key demographics. Nearly 60% of Sacramento television households watched one or more KCRA newscasts during the month.

In the last decade alone KCRA has received, among other honors, three national Edward R. Murrow Awards, including “Overall Excellence” in the Large Market Television category, as well as numerous Northern California Emmy Awards, and local honors such as a Greater Sacramento Urban League Unity Award.

He went on to become Taft’s VP, television sales, responsible for long-term strategic planning and implementation of corporate sales policies and procedures at the company’s 12 TV stations.

He began his broadcast career in 1971 as a radio account executive at WKAP-AM, Allentown, Pa., later moving to WPHL-TV Philadelphia, as an account executive.
