MFM CFO Summit To Examine Sports Gambling

Gerard Waldron of Covington & Burling will present a comprehensive look at the  federal and state laws and the Supreme Court ruling that paved way for sports betting.

Gerard J. Waldron of Covington & Burling, will offer his insights on sports gambling during the Media Finance  Management’s (MFM) 2019 CFO Summit scheduled for March 7-8 at the Pelican Grand Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. His session will be held on Friday, March 8, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

The comprehensive session will offer a general overview on federal and state laws impacting gambling pre-May 2018; the Supreme Court Decision in May 2018 that knocked down federal law prohibiting sports betting; the implications for advertising of sports betting; and the recent DOJ opinion on using wires for non-sports betting.  It is important to note that the information varies state by state.

Waldron represents communications, media, and technology clients before the FCC and Congress, and in commercial transactions. He served as chair of his firm’s communications and media practice group from 1998 to 2008. Prior to joining Covington, Waldron was the senior counsel on the House Subcommittee on Telecommunications. During his work for Congress, he was deeply involved in the drafting of the 1993 Spectrum Auction legislation, the 1992 Cable Act, the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, CALEA and key provisions that became part of the 1996 Telecommunications Act.
