WABC New York Names Porsha Grant Community Engagement & Development VP

ABC O&O WABC New York has appointed ABC Owned Television Stations’ Race & Culture Executive Producer Porsha Grant to VP, community engagement and development, reporting to Marilu Galvez, WABC president and general manager.

Grant will be responsible for new community outreach efforts and growing existing relationships with organizations in the market. The station says she will “align news, programming, marketing and talent with cause-related events and campaigns and leverage opportunities to have efforts supported by advertisers.”

Galvez said: “Porsha has done remarkable work as part of ABC Owned Television Stations’ Race & Culture team working to shine a light on important issues facing underrepresented communities, as well as the solutions that can make a difference in their lives. I know her passion and tireless commitment to having a positive impact will benefit our team, and more importantly, our viewers and the communities we serve.”

Grant has been executive producer, race and culture for ABC Owned Television Stations’ race and culture content team since its inception in 2020. She managed a nationwide team of multi-skilled journalists whose mission is to produce content that amplifies the voices of underrepresented and marginalized communities. Together the team creates content for ABC OTV’s daily newscasts, the station group’s digital and streaming platforms.

Most recently, she executive produced the documentary, Our America: Mission Montford Point, that tells the story of the largely overlooked trailblazers who were the first Black men to serve in the U.S. Marine Corps — the Montford Point Marines. It details this heroic military unit’s history — which was never acknowledged until recently — and highlights the ongoing plight to find these Marines and/or their descendants to honor them with a Congressional Gold Medal. Currently, an estimated 2,000 men have received the medal, leaving approximately 18,000 still due the honor. To commemorate Veteran’s Day today (Friday, Nov. 11), the special is airing this week across all eight ABC Owned Television Stations linear channels, as well as the groups’ mobile and connected TV apps.

Before leading the ABC OTV Race and Culture Content Team, Grant worked at ABC’s WPVI Philadelphia for 15 years, most recently as executive producer of news. She established herself as a leader beyond her producing by spearheading a team dedicated to cultural awareness in content creation, voicing the importance of representation in the media and mentoring younger journalists.  She has also worked as a news producer at stations in her hometown of Augusta, Ga., and Charlotte, N.C.

Grant is a graduate of the University of Georgia, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism, with a concentration in broadcast news. She holds professional affiliations with the National Association of Black Journalists, the Online News Association and the Journalism and Women’s Symposium.
