Hurricane Telethon Raises Over $14 Million

Originally conceived as a benefit for victims of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, the Hand in Hand telethon was expanded to help people in Florida and the Caribbean devastated in recent days by Irma. The star-studded telethon that took place in New York, Los Angeles, Nashville and San Antonio raised $14.5 million by the time cameras were turned off.

Irma-Induced Nielsen Ratings Delays Continue

Nielsen said today that its ratings information from this past weekend is delayed because the company’s processing center in Tampa, Fla., was shut down because of Irma. The company’s weekly list of top television programs is usually released Tuesdays, and it’s unclear when it will be ready. It also hasn’t produced overnight ratings this week.

Because of the extreme weather over the weekend, Nielsen was not able to accurately collect viewer data for the official kickoff of Sunday Night Football last night or the debut of The Orville on Fox. “As a result, until we are able to resume normal operations, no data will be issued,” Nielsen told clients late Sunday. “We will keep you updated on the situation and our plans for resuming data release,” the Florida-based data company added after having to shut down operations at its Oldsmar HQ because of Irma’s advance.

NFL Tops Thurs., Slips From Last Year

The NFL Kickoff Game on NBC between the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs was down in the overnight ratings compared to the 2016 season opener. It averaged a 14.6 rating in metered market households. That’s down approximately 12% from the 2016 game, which drew a 16.5. This is also the second year in a row the opening game has been down, with 2016 slipping from 17.7 in 2015. The drop comes as ratings for NFL football was down last season to the tune of 8% per game on average.

Disney Streaming Service Just Got Bigger

Disney’s Star Wars and Marvel comic-book movies will be included in the upcoming service, making it the only way to stream those movies on demand in the U.S. as part of a monthly subscription.
