The Big Four broadcasters are in the final stages of negotiating an eight-year renewal of the deal through which they share rights to televise the Primetime Emmy Awards. For their trouble, they will get to continue broadcasting for nearly a decade what is effectively a commercial for HBO, FX, Netflix, Amazon and Hulu. (Coming soon: Apple!)
The Disney-owned network captured a larger amount of ad commitments for its primetime schedule than it did last year, a signal of Madison Avenue interest in programs like American Idol, The Good Doctorand black-ish. The volume surge at ABC comes despite the network’s loss of Roseanne, the once-celebrated reboot of the Roseanne Barr sitcom that had to be scrapped after its star posted controversial and racist tweets.
ESPY Awards See Steep Drop Off From 2017
The 2018 ESPY Awards broadcast on ABC suffered noticeable declines in in the Wednesday overnight ratings compared to last year’s ceremony. Airing from 8-11 p.m., the ESPYs drew a 0.9 rating in adults 18-49 and 3.9 million viewers. Compared to the 1.4 and 5.3 million viewers the 2017 awards show pulled in, this year’s show was down approximately 36% in the key demo and 26% in total viewers. This also marks the heaviest drop off year-to-year going back two years.
David Zaslav, who helped orchestrate the $14.6 billion merger of Discovery and Scripps Networks earlier this year, will stay at the head of the combined company through 2023, Discovery revealed Wednesday. The executive, who has been at the helm of Discovery since 2007, had previously been on a contract slated to expire in 2020.
The new multicast network will debut on Sept. 3 featuring procedural dramas focusing on strong women. At launch, it will reach 42% of U.S. TV households anchored by the CBS Television Stations.

MLB All-Star Game Holds Steady With 2017
The game is currently at a 2.1 rating in adults 18-49 and 8.3 million viewers, though due to the nature of live sports those numbers will be subject to adjustment later today. In the early numbers at least, this year’s game is down a scant few percentage points from the 2.2 and 8.6 million viewers 2017’s All-Star Game initially drew. The latter game eventually adjusted up to a 2.3 and 9.3 million viewers.

“The Bachelorette” was up slightly in both key ratings measures on Monday to once again claim the top spot of the night. Airing from 8-10 p.m., “The Bachelorette” averaged a 1.6 rating in adults 18-49 and 6.3 million viewers. That is up around 10% in both measures from last week’s episode. Later on ABC, “The Proposal” (0.8, 3.5 million) ticked up in the demo.
