Meteorologist

The Meteorologist presents weather information in a relevant and conversational manner for the viewers in Central Oregon, on-air and online.

This position utilizes scientific background and tools to deliver daily weather forecasts.

The individual will report the weather live from a variety of locations including in studio and the field.  They will be responsible for keeping weather information current and accessible to viewers, which includes forecasts, warnings, severe weather alerts, and generating graphics and maps using weather system tools across all platforms.

  • Utilizes scientific background and tools to deliver weather forecasts from the studio, in the field, or at community events.
  • Maintains website to keep weather information relevant and current.  Publish forecasts, warnings, weather alters, and generate graphics and maps using weather system tools.
  • Work with producers, assignment desk and managers to track current weather and ensure newsroom staff is aware of major weather events.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) -OR- 4+ years professional work experience.
  • 1+ years professional meteorology experience

Other Qualifications

  • On-air experience preferred.
  • Certified Broadcast Meteorologist from the American
  • Meteorology Society preferred.
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to cover severe weather events.

News Anchor

In your role as the News Anchor you’ll operate two broadcast television stations in Bend, OR:  KOHD-TV ABC and KBNZ-TV CBS.

This position must be a trained, news professional who can harness their creativity to tell original, interesting stories that matter to our viewers.

The News Anchor must possess imagination, originality and an on-air personality that is both credible and sincere.

The position must be able to conduct investigative interviews, analyze and interpret public events, and develop editorial insight that will help tell stories that our viewers want to know and need to know in Central Oregon.

As the News Anchor you must have the knowledge and skill to span a broad variety of topics to include current events, history, education, business, social trends, people, community service and other elements uniquely local to Central Oregon.

You’ll also collaborate with reporters and on-air talent to tell stories from the studio or from the field.

  • Anchor (either solo or as a co-anchor) any newscasts as needed which includes reading the prompter, cross-talking with Meteorologists and reporters, interviewing live guests on-set or via live shots, and being able to adjust to and adlib live breaking news situations.
  • Research, develop and write stories for the daily news broadcast.  Exercise editorial judgement to ensure quality live daily content. Also, to include:
  • Writing and producing concise, accurate copy and adhering to strict deadlines.
  • Produce broadcasts within newsroom software for air as assigned. May include:
    • Arranging news stories as they will appear on-air.
    • Timing the flow of content during live on-air broadcasts
    • Writing/editing/formatting news stories for broadcast
    • Coordinating with reporters to ensure stories are inserted into broadcasts in a timely and appropriate manner
  • Research prepare and interview people in a wide range of different fields and circumstances.  May also include the following:
    • Building contacts to maintain a flow of news, for example, police and emergency services, local council, community groups, health trusts, press officers from a variety of organizations, the general public, etc.;
    • Seeking out and investigating stories via your contacts, press releases and other media;
    • Attending press conferences and asking questions;
    • Attending a variety of events, such as council meetings, sporting events, talent contests, etc.;
    • Answering the phones and reacting to topical stories that matter to our viewers; and,
    • Working closely with the broadcast team, photographers, editors and producers
  • Recording/editing interviews using technical camera, recording and computer equipment
  • ‘Live’ online reporting or real-time social media blogging when covering important events.
  • Emcee events and/or make public appearances for Zolo Media as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) -OR- 4+ years professional work experience
  • 5+ years’ experience of ‘On-Camera’ storytelling

Other Qualifications

  • Able to professionally interact with customers and co-workers via strong verbal and written communication skills
    Reliable and motivated to promptly fulfill obligations; able to work independently without supervision.
  • Able to analyze situations, use logic to address issues and pay careful attention to details.
  • Demonstrated writing and editorial judgement experience.
  • Familiar with newsroom producing software
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office & Apple computers, understand and able to troubleshoot computers preferred; Basic understanding of broadcast cameras and how to operate them.
  • Basic non-linear editing skills.  Final Cut, Adobe Premier, Avid, or similar.
  • Able to work evenings and weekends as a part of a regular schedule and/or dictated by business needs
  • Strong work ethic with an emphasis on team commitment.
  • Valid driver’s license with satisfactory driving record (supplied by applicant)

  • Interviewing people in a range of different circumstances. May also include the following:
    • Building contacts to maintain a flow of news, for example, police and emergency services, local council, community groups, health trusts, press officers from a variety of organizations, the general public, etc;
    • Seeking out and investigating stories via your contacts, press releases and other media.
    • Attending press conferences and asking questions;
    • Attending a variety of events, such as council meetings, sporting events, talent contests, etc;
    • Answering the phones and reacting to topical stories that matter to our viewers.
  • Working closely with the broadcast team, photographers and editors and producers. Writing and editorial judgement for live and recorded daily content. Also, to include:
    • Producing concise and accurate copy and to adhering to strict deadlines.
    • Check reference materials, such as books, news files, or public records to obtain relevant facts.
    • Receive assignments and contribute to story ideas and development.
  • Revise work to meet editorial approval or to fit time/space requirements, and within editorial style guidelines.
  • Recording/editing interviews using technical camera and computer equipment.
  • Submitting copy for the digital publication of all stories completed as assigned.
  • ‘Live’ online reporting or real-time social media blogging when covering important events. Adaption of stories to On-line and web platforms.

Required Qualifications

  • Associates degree (or higher) -OR- 2+ years professional work experience.
  • 1+ years of newsroom, journalism and/or on-camera storytelling experience

Other Qualifications 

  • Demonstrated writing and editorial judgement experience.
