Role Summary:
NBC4 Los Angeles is looking for an experienced, creative and motivated leader to partner with the Vice President of News to manage aspects of the station’s News department including daily coverage, long and short-range planning.

Job Purpose:
The successful Managing Editor candidate will be one who has strong news judgment, is responsible for production of content, supervises editorial staff, and supervises the execution of the daily newscast. The managing editor will be a model staff member. This position will report directly to the VP of News.

Essential Responsibilities:
Responsible for leading the daily editorial process and giving direction to the editorial team
Provide supervision and instruction to editorial staff including reporters, photographers, assignment editors and producers
Approve reporter scripts, editing the copy as well as making sure stories meet the station’s legal and standards guidelines
Review content for facts and up-to-date information in addition to reviewing for grammar, style, and agreement with editorial policy
Guide, lead and manage the station’s coverage of breaking news and the competition’s coverage
Work with the digital team to maximize news coverage on all digital platforms
Participate in the performance appraisal process in conjunction with the Assistant News Director and VP of News
Contribute to the coordination of coverage plans of major news events
Perform other duties as assigned

Basic Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism or related field
Minimum 10 years of newsroom experience
Minimum of 5 years’ experience in news management role (News Director, Assistant News Director, Executive Producer or Managing Editor) in a top 20 market newsroom
Field producing experience
Experience supervising, training, coaching and motivating a team
Proficiency in working with the latest newsroom technologies (both hardware and software)
Ability to help set newsroom policies

Desired Characteristics:
Minimum 5 years’ experience in a top 10 market newsroom
Working knowledge of Los Angeles market
Basic understanding and demonstration of creativity, editorial judgment, journalistic ethics
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and successfully manage multiple assignments concurrently in a high pressure, breaking news, environment
Have strong news judgment with knowledge of legal and ethical issues in multi-media platforms
Good collaborative and interpersonal skills to communicate at all levels
A pioneering spirit with desire to learn emerging technologies and invent the future
