Her role will include daily live reporting as well as coverage of high-profile statewide elections.

“Laws passed in California can have an effect around the country and around the world. The addition of Ashley to our team reinforces our commitment to covering our state’s vast government with depth, shining a spotlight on important decisions that impact Californians,” said KCRA News Director Derek Schnell.

Zavala most recently worked as the State Capitol Bureau reporter for Nexstar Media Group. She started her career at KOMU Columbia, Mo., then worked as a news and sports reporter at multiple outlets in Columbia and Jefferson City. Her reporting included the historic resignation of Missouri’s governor in 2018.
